TT Nairobi Residency: 21-28 January hosted by Untethered Magic

Transart Institute held a week-long residency at Untethered Magic in Ongata Rongai, Nairobi, Kenya from January 21st to 28th, featuring talks, workshops, gatherings, city exploration, and dinners.
Untethered Magic, established in 2019, fosters dialogue among global south, BIPOC north, and colonial actors in contemporary art, creating safe spaces for experimentation and addressing colonialism through critical dialogue. They provides an alternative to traditional societal structures and facilitate engagement between artists and communities from various cultural backgrounds.

🎙️ Guest reviewers included Don Handa, Neo Sinoxolo Musangi, with guest instructors Rose Jepkorir Kiptum, Jared Onyango, Joseph Kanyenje, Dr Onyango Oketch, Rosie Olang’ Odhiambo, Musyoki Mutua, and Ogutu Muraya.

As a part of the residency:
Transartists explored the Nairobi metropolitan area with local artists Joseph Kanyenje, Jared Onyango, and Musyoki Mutua.
Syowia Kyambi delivered a talk on “Exploring the Kenyan Visual Art Scene: A Historical Perspective,” providing insights into the development of the creative fields in Nairobi.
Residents visited Olorgesailie Pre-Historic Site and Lake Magadi for insights into early human history.
Residents explored Nairobi’s art scene, visiting the Contemporary And office, Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute, and engaging with local art spaces.
Rosie Olang Odhiambo led a tour of Kamene Art Residency and a studio visit to Kaloki Nyamai.
