Artist’s Statement

Gina Dominique’s current work is motivated by her research in philosophy of art, feminist aesthetics, and autotheory. Her palettes are influenced by the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale, used since the 1970s to determine SPF levels required to prevent sunburn, by the Pantone SkinTone Guide, by various beauty industry product promotional color charts, and by her own olive skin tone. Most of the paintings in Skin Deep are executed in a gestural style, which read like abstracted graffiti, including a show highlight, The Paintress & The Composer, a 54 x 120 inch acrylic triptych on linen, 2023.

It focuses on the personal nature of Dominique’s series, while other paintings, done using post-minimalist techniques, for example, Populus, Humilus et Divinus (People, Humble and Divine), a 180 x 32 inch acrylic triptych on linen, 2023, speak to her approach to contemporary globalist issues.
