Bio: Switzerland-born Stephan Timbers lives in Basel and Munich with regular sojourns to Detroit, USA. After studies in biology and medical parasitology he continued to study graphic design at the Basel School of Design, Switzerland. His diploma work included a research about the western influences on Japanese art from the mid-16th to early 1900. Following 4 years of employment as a graphic designer in agencies in Munich and Zurich, where he specializes in corporate design, he opened his own studio for visual communication in 2001 and worked as a teacher. Such activities allow him to concentrate on non-commercial projects ranging from the classical disciplines of visual communication to interactive design and programming, experimental films and photography as well as graphic interventions into the urban environment. In his work he regularly refers to the history of transcultural influences as well as their conflicts, which result in projects like «Mr. Hashimoto was a Nip» an experimental film about his grandfathers memories of the pacific war or the interactive interface «Smokeytown» about racially influenced encounters in Detroit as experienced in his own family, which shares white-european and afro-american roots. He is a member of the urban art group «ratsbane» and is currently working on abstract interactive conflict-simulations.
