Bio: Brett Bloom is an artist, writer and organizer. His main work is with the group Temporary Services. Temporary Services works on several levels simultaneously and will both participate in the forthcoming Athens Biennial and also realize several self-initiated projects. We co-run an experimental cultural center in Chicago called Mess Hall that is a place for visual art to be in dialog with such things as urban planning, permacultural design, food activism, and more. Temporary Services has published over 73 booklets and books, and had exhibitions in major institutions and independent spaces from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Kassel, Germany. Temporary Services forthcoming book “Group Work” will be out in March through Printed Matter, NYC, and is an in depth look at why people choose to work creatively in groups. Bloom has essays about artists groups in two forthcoming books: 1) Haha: Everyday Practices, WhiteWalls, 2007 and 2) Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority, AK Press, 2007. Bloom is currently doing research, with collaborator Ava Bromberg, for a series of exhibitions and a forthcoming book called UNHOUSED that takes a look at creative responses to global housing crises.
