Application process
To be considered for admission to the MFA program, applicant must electronically submit the following materials through an online form (link to: http://www.transartinstitute.org/Pages/NewForms/ApplicationForm1.php)
1. Application Form
A completed on-line application form.
2. Fee
Application fee of $50 USD, paid through PayPal.
3. Portfolio
Your portfolio should demonstrate a well developed independent and critical art practice. There is no specified length or number of images. The portfolio should be online. Alternatively a maximum of 8 MB of digital material can be emailed to admin@transartinstitute.org
4. Personal Statement
Please address the following: What themes and interests guide your practice? How you would like to develop your practice? How do you see your practice in relation to contemporary culture? (300-600 words)
5. First Year Project Plan
Outline your proposed first year of study in the program. Describe your project proposal. Please include references and resources you intend to use. Briefly discuss how research may inform your art practice.
6. Curriculum Vitae or Resume
Materials must be submitted in unformatted version. Include current employment and weekly workload.
7. Transcripts or Diplomas
Unofficial copies should be faxed or emailed to begin application process. Please note official copies are required upon enrollment. Diplomas or official transcripts (sealed) must be delivered at the summer residency. Please do not mail transcripts or diplomas to the institute. 8. Advanced Standing
To apply for advanced standing, please detail the graduate level courses from your transcript(s) that you want considered. Also provide official course descriptions or syllabus(i). One semester of advanced standing may be granted for graduate level work from accredited institutions if completed course work relates to course content in Transart’s MFA program, pending evaluation of transcripts and review of course descriptions and learning outcomes. Professional experience will not be considered for advanced standing.
7. Professional Equivalency
It is possible to apply to the program without a first (undergraduate) degree. Candidates for professional equivalency must produce a comprehensive, enhanced CV showing professional experiences which are relevant to learning outcomes of specific courses/modules in Art, Design, Media and related fields. The CV should, where relevant, include conferences/workshops attended, papers presented, completed courses as well as exhibitions, teaching, curatorial projects, promotion and material developed in order to be considered for professional equivalency
8. English as a Second Language.
At Transart Institute, English is the primary language. Residency activities are conducted in English and it is required that all participants have mastery of the English in order to speak, understand, read critical texts, and correspond at a proficient level. Students can work with their Advisors in any language they choose. Students can also do their research and write their papers in any language as approved by their faculty or advisor. All administrative work including student evaluations and other paper work must be in English. Therefore, if English is not your first language, you may be required to provide a TOEFL with a score (iBT) of 52 or better.
Interviews
Phone/Skype interviews are held with all finalists.
Alumni, students and faculty are available for consultation prior to commitment to the program.
Criteria for Admissions
Applications are evaluated by committee on the basis of:
- Applicant’s artistic achievement
- Applicant’s potential for growth and creativity
- Applicant’s ability to work and think independently
- Applicant’s interest in engaging in discourse, developing relationships and contributing to the Ti community.
Deferment Policy
Deferment of admission is not permitted. Admitted candidates who cannot attend the upcoming summer session must reapply to the program for consideration in a future year.
Credits
The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Practice carries 240 UK credits, equal to 60 credits in the U.S. and 120 ECTS in the Bologna system. The program is validated through School of Art and Media at the University of Plymouth, UK.
Disability
Transart Institute will undertake every reasonable effort to accommodate students with special needs or disabilities, be they physical or sensory impairments, mental health and learning difficulties, or other health conditions. Prospective applicants should indicate any special needs and/or disabilities on the admissions application form. All special needs will be negotiated after individual consultations.
